What is your job at SenSat?

The VP of Engineering.

What are you most looking forward to in your role?

Joining a group of smart, passionate, and knowledgeable people to help them build a world-class engineering organisation and platform.

Why did you join SenSat?
At first, I was excited about the opportunity to work on physical data, mapping technologies, and the potential of running simulations on 3D digital mirrors of the real world. I was also impressed with all the people I had met. And I’m thrilled to be in a stimulating environment, surrounded by curious minds, where I can learn new things. I also think now is the perfect time to join SenSat to have a big impact and help shape the organisation.

What has been the proudest achievement in your career?

I’m most proud of having worked on the BBC Homepage and iPlayer, and for helping to build the DataSift engineering team and a platform able to work at Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin at scale.

If you could write a slogan for SenSat, it would read:

Laying the foundations for planning and simulations in the real world.

What country are you from?

I'm from Italy.

What book has had the most impact on your life? What did it teach you?

Probably not the most impactful on my life, but one that truly kindled my interest in art history:  “The Agony and the Ecstasy” by Irving Stone, on the life of Michelangelo. It turned what - in my opinion - used to be a boring subject into something fascinating. It truly opened a window in the life of the artists in order to view them as real people; with their struggles, their inspirations, the historical context they lived in, the powerful people and events they were affected by, and how it all ended up into the creation of masterpieces which to us represent the embodiment of the concept of “beauty” in different periods.

Tell us about a time where you “failed” that set you up for success later on.

Many years ago, when consulting in London, I was tasked with improving the performance of a complex, data-heavy website. I initially started working on my own, profiling the code and making it faster. I then realised I was never going to achieve the desired goals with that approach alone, as waiting for the data to arrive from the providers was already blowing the webpage generation time budget many times over, and running the code itself was negligible in comparison. For me, it was a pivotal point in my career; I then understood that the alignment of goals and coordination of all parties was far more important than individual effort.

If you could have a billboard in London that thousands of people were going to see, what would you put on it and why?

Read books. Never stop learning.

What are some things that everyone should try at least once?

Cooking. I think it's important for everyone to see how easy it is to prepare tasty and healthy meals. And travelling! Learning about different cultures and other people's viewpoints can bring richness to one’s life.

If you could travel back to any one point in time, what would it be and why?

14th Century Florence. I would love to witness the birth of many technological, mathematical, linguistic, economic and artistic inventions and innovations, and experience the conditions that made them possible.

If you could invite five people, dead or alive, to a dinner party, who would you choose?

Filippo Brunelleschi, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Leonardo da Vinci, Giacomo Leopardi, and Dante Alighieri.
